Clash Royale: Best Ways to Spend Gems and Gold

Never have buyer's remorse again!

Gems and gold are the two most important currencies in Clash Royale. Knowing the best ways to spend both is essential to optimizing your gains, especially if you want to get high-level cards. I’ll take a look at how to get gems and gold and how to optimally spend each!

How to Get Gems and Gold in Clash Royale

Before we get into how to spend them, I guess we should look at how to get gems and gold in the first place. There are a bunch of ways to get both, usually in small amounts. Here a few of the most common ways to get them:

  • Doing Battles
  • Special Events
  • Season Pass (Free and Paid Sides)
  • Tournaments
  • Post-Game Rewards
  • Free Gift in the Shop
  • Clan Wars
  • …and more!

Doing battles typically gets you some free rewards, so it’s the most reliable way to get them. However, the quickest way to get lots of gems and gold is easily the season pass. If you only have the free part of the pass, you’ll still get a bunch of rewards. Special events also frequently have rewards attached to them. Tournaments always have some form of rewards system, and it’s rare for gold and/or gems not to be included in some form. Even the Classic and Grand Challenges give these as one of the rewards.

There are also, of course, the post-game reward chests that can sometimes give gold. You can get tens of thousands of gold from them if you get a high-star chest. You can also pick up a small free gift in the shop each day, which is sometimes a few thousand gold or a hundred or so gems. Plus Clan Wars, if you do them.

How to Spend Gems in Clash Royale

In all honesty, there aren’t a ton of great uses for gems in Clash Royale. There are a lot of ways you can spend them, though, so let’s start off with a quick list to round them up:

  • Elite Wild Cards (12,500 Elite Wild Cards for 2,000 gems)
  • Daily Deals
  • Royal Chests
  • Emotes
  • Tournament Entries

Starting from the top, I don’t really think the Elite Wild Cards are a good thing to buy with gems unless you have a ton. They’re just too expensive.

The Daily Deals are the offers in the shop where you can pay gems or gold for a certain amount of cards. I always recommend checking the Daily Deals in the shop each day since you can get some really good offers.

Then there are three royal chests to buy, increasing with value as the cost goes up: Lightning Chest (250 gems), Fortune Chest (750 gems), and Legendary King’s Chest (2,500 gems). I don’t think chests are the best thing to spend gems on, but they’re not the worst.

Next up are the emotes in the shop. If you see an emote you like, then the 250 gem price isn’t that bad. Obviously there’s no reason to buy them, but why not?

Tournament entries are the last thing you can do, and it’s probably what I spend my gems on the most. Whether it be the Classic and Grand Challenges or event-related tournaments, I usually use a lot of gems to enter and/or retry them.

How to Spend Gold in Clash Royale

Figuring out how to spend your gold is a bit easier than with gems. Gold in Clash Royale is primarily used to upgrade card levels. While it starts out pretty cheap to do so, later levels require a ton of gold. I never feel bad when I’ve stockpiled a ton of gold up, because I know eventually I’ll end up using it all to upgrade one or two cards.

However, if you don’t want to save your gold, there are a few other ways to spend it. Just like with gems, you can spend gold to buy Elite Wild Cards. It’s 100,000 gold for 5,000 of them, so I really don’t think they’re worth buying, but they are an option. Then you have the Daily Deals just like with gems.

Use your gold however you want, but I pretty much never use it for anything other than leveling up cards. The other options just aren’t nearly as valuable as more levels.
